Saw x film update

In April of 2021, news surfaced about the production of the tenth installment in the Saw film series, aptly named “Saw X.” Twisted Pictures, the production company, was confirmed to be spearheading this project. Notably, Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, the talented writers behind “Jigsaw” and “Spiral,” both revealed that the screenplay had been finalized by December 2021. Moving ahead to August 2022, Bloody Disgusting broke the story that Kevin Greutert, known for his editing work on previous Saw films and directing “Saw VI” (2009) and “Saw 3D” (2010), would helm this upcoming installment.

Casting

In October of 2022, it was officially announced that Tobin Bell would be returning to portray the character John Kramer, also known as Jigsaw. Director Greutert revealed to Empire magazine that Bell’s presence in the film would surpass his previous appearances in the series. As the year drew to a close in December 2022, Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, and Michael Beach were confirmed to join the cast. Additionally, Shawnee Smith made her return to the role of Amanda Young. The cast further expanded with the inclusion of Renata Vaca, Paulette Hernandez, Joshua Okamoto, and Octavio Hinojosa.

Filming

Filming for the project occurred on location in Mexico City, spanning from late October 2022 through February 2023. The intricate trap designs necessitated a unique filming schedule, which was divided into two segments: three weeks in November and an additional three weeks in January. Director Greutert explained to SFX, “We had to create numerous prosthetics and machines, and during the Christmas period, we dedicated our time to perfecting these elements.”

During the Midsummer Scream 2023 convention, cinematographer Nick Matthews expressed their desire to pay homage to the earlier Saw films. He elaborated, saying, “Kevin and I felt it was crucial to honor the aesthetics of the early films. We cherish their 1:85 aspect ratio, their textured and gritty visuals, the bold yellow color palettes, and our goal was to immerse the audience in this graphic, gritty world with pervasive darkness.” Most of the gruesome effects were achieved practically, with CGI only employed for minor touch-ups.
